The Muppets: Season 1, Episode 1: Pig Girls Don’t Cry
This was so much more than I expected and I expected a lot. For years I’ve hummed The Muppet Show’s theme to myself for no apparent reason, so when I heard this was coming I got very excited. Now it has mixed two of the things I love: Muppets and 30 Rock! That’s really essentially what this show is and it’s so fantastic. It’s as if Liz Lemon and the rest were people we had grown up with. They don’t have to bother with establishing who these characters are, we know them, so the show was able to hit the ground running.
Let’s not even discuss celebrity appearances. Both the Jim Henson company and Disney have long standing reputations of getting cameos, almost like SNL. From Sesame St. to the aforementioned Muppet Show, to Follow that Bird to every Muppet/Sesame St movie ever, they have always had guest appearances from famous faces. This show is no different with it’s premiere displaying Elizabeth Banks and Tom Bergeron in hilarious ways.
As I said, this show is very different from what I expected. I don’t think it’s really a good show for kids. That being said, I don’t think kids care. The kids of this day and age don’t know anything about the Muppets. They may know a little about Sesame St, but Muppets are a whole other ball game. They don’t even really know who the Looney Tunes are these days. That being said, it’s perfect for people who actually grew up with the Muppets. There were even some pretty serious personal moments with the characters. Namely Kermit, Piggy and Fozzie! The characters we know and love are maturing with us and it works really well.
I will definitely be enjoying this show every week. MUPPETS!!!!!!
