Gotham: Season 1, Episode 19: Beasts of Prey

This show is staying pretty interesting. With its premise, I was very doubtful of where it could go. I’m still curious as to how long it can last or what they plan on doing with Bruce. He’s so young that I doubt we’ll see any Batman here, but I did think he would be out of the picture by now. David Mazouz is really convincing as the child who would be Batman. He’s even getting involved in mysteries already.

It stands to reason that a detective as good as the Dark Knight would’ve started as a child. Of course Selena is an enormous help to him in the series, which is one of the things you kind of just have to accept from this series. I can see her brutality coming into play with his methods later. She’s willing to do what needs to be done.

Fish Mooney isn’t a terrible character, but I’m having a hard time staying interested in her story. Jada Pinkett-Smith is clearly having a ball with the role, but her subplot seems to be wearing thin. The writers are doing what they can, but I think the character only really works when mixed in with the other mobsters. I don’t think we needed this whole island thing to show us how powerful and clever she is. Fortunately, they’re done with the island now, or at least I hope so. They need to get her back to Gotham and soon. No matter how well acted she may be, she’s in danger of becoming boring. I’m starting to understand why Mrs. Pinkett-Smith isn’t signing on for another season.

Oswald is proving to be very ambitious. His part was very small in this episode, but I got the point. Well, it would’ve been kind of difficult to not get the point. They definitely just stated it outright. He’s going to try to kill Don Maroni. I think this part would have worked in any other episode, but seeing as how the show just took yet another break, it helped to serve as a reminder. I wonder if that was the plan all along. I’m tired of random midseason breaks. Can I just get my shows please?

I like where things are going with the Ogre. I’ve liked Milo Ventimiglia since he was Peter Petrelli and it was very interesting to see him as a villain here. Smooth psycho looking for true love and punishing those who fail with brutal death. The premise here is very interesting. He kills the ones you love if you come for him. That’s kept police off his back thus far.

Unfortunately for him and possibly for Lesley Thompkins, James Gordon doesn’t just quit. Commissioner Loeb is trying to set him up, but he’s probably only going to end up making him look like even more of a hero. I can only see police gaining more faith in him if he succeeds. They are definitely building up to a very climatic showdown for the end of season one. I’m glad to know they plan on finishing the season with no further interruptions.
