The Last Man on Earth: Season 1, Episode 3: Raisin Balls and Wedding Bells
This show has some really good writing. It’s like every time I just wonder how they’re going to continue this show and every time I find myself eager to see what comes next. The character interactions between Phil and Carol are priceless. They are both so full of personality and as insane as they both are, they are both still somewhat relatable.
Carol’s need for stability even with no civilization meshes so well with Phil’s complete disregard for the rules of the old world. Her reaction to meeting his “ex girlfriend” was hilarious. “That’s a nice name for a hussy!” The sex scenes were kind of off-putting, but fitting all the same. What was very refreshing was seeing the two of them start to tolerate and even like each other as they began to share their favorite activities with each other.
Her “metaphoric” speeches about raisin balls and making the best out of their situation even have a bit of wisdom hidden in their insanity. Watching this episode, you can actually see these two being a real and functional(ish) couple. That’s when we see that newly built love and comfort shattered! The ending of this episode is fantastic and timed so perfectly. It almost guarantees a reaction of: “Man, that’s messed up!”
