Better Call Saul: Season 1, Episode 6: Five-O

This was the episode that everyone needed, but had no idea they wanted. Changing the focus of the show from James McGill to Mike Ehrmantraut was a very good change of pace. We got to see some backstory from the life of a major contender for my favorite “Breaking Bad” character. I’ve always wondered how Mike went from Philadelphia cop to Enforcer for Albuquerque drug lord. I knew we would see some of his past, but his character was introduced after his former fall-from-grace.

It was particularly interesting to see how close he was with his granddaughter, but not with her mother. Finding out about his murdered son and his former career as a dirty cop was amazing. Even after seeing how ruthless he seemed in Breaking Bad you always believed he was a man of honor. It made sense to see that he has been a rule breaker all along.

A brilliant strategist with a massive flaw. It’s interesting to see that Mike has been able to beat his alcoholism by the time he meets Walt. I suppose I’m still seeking connections to the parent series, but how can I resist? Who would’ve thought there would be such a wealth of history to this character.

The connection to Saul/Jimmy was also very well done. Mike had a plan and he needed someone he trusted (who owed him a solid) to help him carry it out. It just happened to be convenient that it was a lawyer who owed him. You can see the relationship building between the two characters and it’s easy to see that these two men can rely on each other in the future.

This show is easily becoming the one that I look forward to the most every week. Keep it coming Vince!
