Heroes Reborn: Season 1, Episode 1: Brave New World/Odessa

I was nervous going into Heroes Reborn. Heroes was so amazing up until Arthur Patrelli died. The momentum and energy they had, was just played out by then. Which is really sad, considering a similar concept has been running in X-Men comics for over fifty years. It seemed like the writers of the show really just didn’t know what else to do with their characters. By the end of season four, I was groaning at the lack of the same character development that was present in the first two seasons. It appears that now however, they have taken the one interesting thing that happened in season four and made it interesting.

For all of the original series, the evolved humans (now referred to as “evos”) were a secret. In the final scene of season four, Claire Bennet announced their existence to the world. It was a spot where the show could’ve regained its flavor, but after a season and a half of coasting through episodes, it was the series finale. Now we have a world where evos are living among humans in a very Marvel mutants kind of way. They are hated and feared by normal humans and are hunted by murderous vigilantes and monetized by corporations.

This double episode did some pretty impressive character introductions, even though the rugged facial hair and similar haircuts on a lot of the characters made people hard to tell apart sometimes. Everyone had decent backgrounds and unique circumstances, similar to how they were in the first season of the first series. The established storylines were a little less compelling though. After an hour and a half of show, I felt interested, but not excited about returning for the next episode. Honestly, the few powers they did show were either too vague, too obscure to be exciting or awesome, but already over as a lot of characters died.

I’m going to keep watching in order to see where it goes and there is a lot of promise. Jack Coleman’s well performed return as Noah Bennet and mentions of Mohinder Suresh are definitely my top reasons for coming back next Thursday. Here’s to hoping it gets better and much closer to Heroes Season One. I just want more clarity and better suspense.
