Heroes Reborn: Season 1, Episode 3: Under the Mask
This week’s Heroes Reborn seemed a lot more focused than last week. Noah Bennet is shining more and more brightly as time goes on. The only thing I’m not really liking, is the whole figuring out what happened to Claire thing. How can Claire be dead when they repeatedly insisted that she was immortal? I’m pretty sure the biggest issue is the fact that Hayden Panettiere wouldn’t come back, otherwise I would be really annoyed. To be honest, even though her character was very interesting in the first season, I was groaning at the fact that she would never die by the end of the fourth.
There are just so many loose ends from the original series that I’m sure we won’t hear about here. Hire Nakamura was mentioned, but I’m fairly certain it’s a red herring and we won’t see him. I’m not just complaining, but I think they should’ve tried something else here. The show isn’t terrible so far, but they seem to have waited too long to make a comeback. The the big problem with all of these series resurrections that’ve been happening over the past few years, stars go on to become bigger stars with less time.
I’m still not 100% sure where they’re going with a lot of this stuff, but I’m hoping it gets more interesting for the majority of the characters. Right now, Bennet seems to be the only one that’s attention worthy. The kid being stalked by the fat guy is pretty boring, the El Vengador thing is progressing too slowly and the girl in the snow is way too vague. Luke and Joanne are kind of annoying archetypes and Luke ending up with powers was predictable, but at least they seem to have a complexity that a lot of other characters aren’t showing. Let’s not forget Miko though. Her story, while fun, is just not making any real sense. What is her power exactly?
The introduction of Harris and the larger amount of information about Renautus were decent points in the plus column. His character seems to have a lot of potential in terms of powers and attitude, but he’s a stooge. If he was a little more in charge I think I would like him more. Maybe we’ll get more insight into who he is next week. Renautus is also interesting, but I need to see a bit more. Why are they hunting evos? Where did their wealth and power come from? Why are they recycling the plot of X-Men 2? I want this show to succeed out of disappointment for where the original series ended up so I’m hoping for the best, unfortunately it’s just not generating the same steam or momentum the beginning of that show had. Please just keep Noah alive.
