Powers: Season 1, Episode 9: Level 13

We got that one thing I’ve been asking for: More Wolfe! There wasn’t much more Wolfe, but there’s definitely a promise of a major season finale, starring our gentleman monster. It only hurts my feelings that there was no Zora this week. I just wanted to look at her.

Speaking of the ladies on screen. I’m still largely bored with Calista and Deena still isn’t being developed enough. She’s supposed to be the second lead, but it appears that she’s nothing more than a supporting character. It feels like everyone else has a bigger part than her. She’s just there to gripe and pout about things.

It was a very good episode for tension building and there was a lot happening. It was revealed early on that Christian was plotting a double-cross. Who was he double-crossing? Everyone apparently. He was double-crossing Johnny to get him arrested and he was doing the same to everyone else so he could get his powers back. He had a fairly solid plan, but he underestimated everyone’s lack of trust for him. He went through with his plan and even managed to catch Johnny, but his scheme to get his powers back failed. His “friends” didn’t trust him and replaced Wolfe with a decoy.

Johnny had to involved far less people (or far more if you count Simons) in his scheme, but he was even worse off at the end than Christian. He released Simons and sh*t COMPLETELY hit the fan. Simons played his part almost to perfection. He created all of the chaos that Johnny needed to attempt to avoid capture from Christian and his ilk. The only problem is that he may have gotten himself killed in the process. Releasing Wolfe was a massive mistake. Considering how loyal Simons is to Wolfe, he should’ve known how bad an idea that was.

Wolfe had to be set free though. The next episode is the season finale so there was little doubt that that would happen. They haven’t set up much else in terms of climactic events. I imagine the whole “Black Swan” scenario has to do with his absorption of the powers who have taken Sway. I think the apex of the finale episode will be Calista getting her powers and defeating him.

As of right now, I’m not a huge fan of the Chaotic Chic thing, but I imagine that will mostly come to a head next season. If they’re wise, they’ll start next season with “Who Killed Retro Girl.” I think they’ll probably make it more about Jumpstriker though. Poor Jumpstriker. I dope hope they get enough support to have a bigger budget next season though. The special effects could be much better.
