Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 3, Episode 2: Purpose in the Machine

AgentsOfShieldS03E02

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has officially reached a point where I actually care about the characters. That’s just something that generally happens when one spends a few years with a cast, but this show is showing a lot of heart. These characters are living, breathing, flawed and lovable. Considering how difficult it was to stay in the game during season one, this show has more than proven itself to me. Skye/Daisy is growing into her powers really well and growing in responsibility and skill. Coulson is doing his best to keep his team together. Bobbi is dealing with being benched as well as trying to find the right move for her relationship with Hunter, who is having trouble expressing himself in any way other than murdering Ward. May has had a rough go of it and is doing her best to get it together.

That leaves me with the two characters that are on opposite ends of the spectrum: Mack and Fitz. Mack still seems really undeveloped. They’ve bent over backwards to make sure we know all about everyone and their motivations, but we just don’t know enough about Mack. He’s a regular, but he’s kind of a mystery and a little inconsistent. What happened to him being a mechanic and hating violence? He’s a field man now and dealing with violence on a daily basis, so does he hate his job now? As physically imposing as he is, I think we need to learn more about his background, or even what he wants. Keeping us in the dark about his past makes me a little concerned. After all, there were so many hints about Triplett’s past, but we didn’t learn anything at all before he died and he was considerably more charismatic than Mack.

Fitz is managing to steal the show every week. Everyone seemed like cookie cutter characters when the series began, but now we have this family Coulson has put together. Since being brain damaged, Fitz has definitely become one of the most compelling characters. He is completely unwavering in his beliefs and will do anything he must to keep his loved ones safe. This time he risked it all to save Simmons who I’m glad to have back. She showed a little affection at the end, but I’m really hoping she starts to love him back from now on. I also hope she tells us what she encountered there. I need to know where she was and what was going on!
