The Last Man on Earth: Season 2, Episode 1: Is Anybody Out There?

This what definitely not what I expected. I thought this was going to be another easy going, humor filled episode. Instead, it was incredibly depressing. It started off with a few laughs, but it really took a hard left. To be honest, at this point in time I’m not sure how to feel about this episode. I mean The Last Man on Earth has previously shown us a decent amount of complexity. It has gone a long way toward what can be said of serious plot points in a comedic setting.

We are in a post-apocalyptic setting where everyone was killed in a virus, after all. Yet the show constantly pulls laughs out of our lungs. Not only that, but this is a series that puts their characters through real struggles and permanent change. I actually wondered why the credits during the first season actually said “guest appearance by” for a lot of the actors. Then the season finale came along a basically told us that we aren’t going to see them again. That’s pretty major.

Phil Tandy Miller lost everything in the season one finale, but he managed to walk away with the one person who truly cared about him. Carol has always gotten on his nerves, but she has also been his rock since the day they met. They make a very strange, but very compatible and cute couple. That’s why things seemed so tragic when he lost her during their mutual silent treatment. They are both alone again, and this time he has no central base or signs to point her to where he is. It does not look good. Even Phil’s brother in space is feeling a bit down since his grub worm died. Maybe he’ll get the courage to go home and find Phil pretty soon.

Phil even missed her so much that he dared go back to Tucson. It was kind of a shock to see that the five other people who were once there are now gone. Where did they go?  There was a throwaway line in season one where other Phil asks why they would live in Arizona, but I can only speculate as to whether or not that’s why they left. It’s a mystery and where they might’ve gone is an even bigger mystery. The only way to tell is to keep watching, which I will gladly down. Hopefully they’re done with the tear jerking and are ready to hurt more stomachs with laughter.
