Minority Report: Season 1, Episode 2: Mr. Nice Guy
This week was a little bit better than last week. That’s usually how it is post pilot though. When all of the introduction baggage is out of the way, it gives a show a little room to spread its wings. We got to see a little of that here. There was a bit more of Vega’s history revealed and even more of her skill shown. Unfortunately, I can’t really see her getting away with her independent investigating for too much longer without the rest of her department figuring it out. Blake is already on to her and it’s only the second episode. I don’t know how many episodes were ordered, but we’ll see how the pacing works out on that. I doubt her secret will be safe all season.
Dash is noble, but misguided. He does everything in his meager power to prevent murder and it’s interesting to see how his results affect him. His speech about his first kill was very interesting and made a ton of logical sense. The biggest mistake Vega seems to be making is her growing dependency on precogs. Dash isn’t bad, but Arthur seems like a mistake to deal with pretty much every time. She wants to stop crime too much to slow it down. She’s even resorted to going to Arthur behind Dash’s back.
The world of Minority Report is very beautiful and unique. It seems as if they’re allocating a very large amount of their budget just on establishing shots and random background gadgets. It’s seeming more and more promising though. I think this show can go pretty far as long as it makes itself more than just a futuristic buddy cop show. It does seem as though there’s an interesting plot underneath it all though. Abigail seems to be expecting Vega to bring back pre-crime. That will be an excellent development if done right.
