Episode 605

Love this show. Seeing the astounding inadequacy of Greendale college never gets old. They never get anything real done and their issues are simply absurd, but also fantastic. Dean Pelton couldn’t even answer the questions he was asked that he obviously knew. He is so ridiculous and his obsession with Jeff just constantly gets worse. The texting gag was hilarious and just shows how much denial clouds the judgement.

Keith David’s Elroy, as the resident old man replacement for Chevy Chase and Jonathan Banks (also as the new token black guy since Shirley and Troy are gone), is a pretty interesting change from the previous grumpy characters. He’s actually pretty pleasant and extremely helpful and reasonable. He was a bit of a curmudgeon in the past episode, but he’s much more likable this time. He seems to be the “what I would do if I was there” character. He trails off on tangents pretty often during conversations, but he’s a little less extreme than anyone else. He’s probably just getting into the swing of things though. The rest of the cast took time to find their roles.

I think Britta has seen the most change out of all of the characters in the show. She went from an aimless rebel to “the worst.” She’s more or less a complete idiot now, I suppose she is partially filling in the void left by Troy’s departure. The rest of the cast has seen smaller changes, but I also think Abed’s character feels less complete without his other half. He’s still one of the best characters in the show though.

I liked seeing how much Annie idolizes Frankie. It’s like seeing a far less emotional version of her future self. She followed her along until she had a moment of moral obligation. Then she changed her tune. She stood for what she believed in and that’s what we’re used to seeing from her. The consistency of reactions in the characters in this show is perfect.

The entire premise of this episode was completely insane, but still very enjoyable. When you have this cast and characters that are this well fleshed out, you can probably write and episode about anything and still make it shine through. I’m so glad Yahoo decided to resurrect this show, but I hope they make their screen app more readily available. I don’t want to have to buy an Apple TV just to enjoy this one series. I might though…
