Scream Queens: Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot
Keep in mind I hung in with Glee from its premier on HULU till the year they lost a beloved cast member. I also binge on AHS and Hemlock Grove annually. Thanx to a bestie who gets warm and fuzzy for all things dark and spooky, and a Bromate who embraces the chick flicks and musicals alike I’ve been primed, ready, and eagerly awaiting this shows debut. I have to admit… neither the gore, nor the cheese factor were lacking. From the opening scenes of bloody hands all the way to the final WTF? moment there were plenty of both.
But perhaps… too much of the latter and not nearly enough of the former for me. While there was gore, there was no scary. I like my horror to make me jump, even if it makes me laugh directly before and/or after. Regrettably the entire Pilot inched by with not a single tense moment or physical jolt. Now the already numerable murders do include some classic stabs and slashings. The giggles getcha over how they play out. The real giggles, however, come into play with the not so standard death scenes.
The cast is Brilliant, as shining and spot on in their portrayals of the characters they play,as the characters themselves are one dimensional and overplayed. Chanel, #1 even, is full tilt self centered diva. The neck brace wearing girl is weird times ten. MILF Dean is a bitter cougar. The list is epic and endless really. I’m hoping its just a case of overstuffed pilot, and not a show intended to burn bright then burn out. There is time for character developement of course, and in a world where everybody has motive, even the dead ones, there is plenty of room as well.
The only real turn off in a show that has embraced their cheese so firmly? Characters that are simultaneously over done being done so spot on you get depressed. I’m working my way through my second half of my thirties, and watching shallow frat boys and diva sorority chicks embody all that is wrong with the newest generations is kind of hard to stomach.
Even if you nod along to the wrath of the Dean and are secretly hope she’s the murderer.
So grab a friend you can dish during the commercials with, and give this one a watch. Even if you spend the entire time making fun of Scream Queens, you’ll be so desperate to know who’s killing everybody and more importantly WHY!? that it’ll be worth it.
