Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 2, Episode 12: Who You Really Are

     So the ride has begun. Lady Sif reappears after a fight with a creature who has overwhelmed her. She doesn’t remember much beyond things she learned in her childhood, but of course her good friends at S.H.I.E.L.D. are eager to butt in. Alien powers coming to Earth and fighting over what’s there is always a fun central plot and this episode has done a pretty good job of pushing the team toward a new path after the last episode hastily wrapped up the Hydra issues. Hopefully that’s not completely over.

I thought they would drag out Skye and Fitz’s secret longer, as they have with most secrets in this show, but it seems as though that’s over. Skye’s transformation is known to the entire crew. I guess for the sake of this episode’s premise that was pretty much a necessity. You can’t exactly have a Kree soldier showing up to hunt a newly altered human being without the group having to be involved.

It was pretty cool to see the gang fighting and running away from two powerful aliens, who wanted to take and/or kill one of their own. I’m just waiting to see what’s going on with Raina and the rest of the inhumans.

I’m not overly impressed with the whole Bobbi and Mack secret, but I suspect we won’t be seeing what it is until at least two episodes from now. I’m thinking the secret is that they work for S.W.O.R.D., an even more secret agency that watches for extra-terrestrial threats. It seems like a fitting direction to go in. It’s pretty early to bring focus to another agency, but S.W.O.R.D. is after all Joss Whedan’s brain child (see Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3, #6).

I really wish they would have explained more about the Kree. We’ve seen the race extensively in Guardians of the Galaxy and they already showed one earlier as the source of Coulson’s miracle cure. This is a long running and important race in the Marvel Universe and can definitely lead to some amazing stories. I just hope they get into the Inhuman royal family or even Mar-Vell soon!

This show is definitely a gate way into much more on the ground and on the cosmic level. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has the vast potential of being the glue between the upcoming Defenders series, the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy if it’s played correctly. Those three tiers could do very well with a little cohesion. I have faith that Marvel will come through on this promise.
