Doctor Who: Season 9, Episode 1: Last Christmas/The Magician’s Apprentice
You’ll have to forgive the delayed posting of this seasons Premiere please. I took on this delightful responsibility a bit late. So today you get two reviews! Better late than never right!? And thankfully- by a true Whovian, as our beloved Elder Reviewer doesn’t actually watch it! (No worries, being a recent convert myself- I’ll get to him eventually. One of Us! One of Us!) As for avoiding spoilers, I think this season will leave me unsure of what to say besides “OMG!? Did you see that!?” “Wait What!?” and “oooooooooohhhhhhh…..” They seem to be aiming to make up for the overabundance of Ninja Onions and entirely too many feels of last season. Lots of epic moments all over the place, and of course. DALEKS.
Now, if you’re reading this because you managed to make it this far not yet being a Whovian, but are contemplating making the plunge. Congrats, I guess, on holding out even longer than I did! You have some epic binge sessions waiting for you. Trust me though, when I tell you this episode, this season even, is not the place to jump in. The story arcs here are two of the most recurring ones in the entire series, Classic Who included. You will not only loose out on a lot of suspension and emotional coaster action, you’ll be lost in the wrong places, and possibly ruin early episodes from other seasons. You could honestly go back to any episode, any season, with better success then jumping in here.
You’d think a show about time travel, the sort done joyously out of order and with no regard to the special effects, would survive being watched out of order. No such luck though. There is a wealth of character development and inside jokes that deserve watching in order. Netflix has all 8 seasons up currently, so you have time to catch up- go start back with Rose, we’ll still be here when its the right time!
So, fellow Whovians, if you’ve managed to avoid seeing the premier yet, go watch the prequel first, it’ll tickle you pink to watch, and does a loverly job of setting up one of the absolutely, legitimately Coolest moments the doctor has ever had. Move over Interesting Meme guy, no beer needed for an axe fight. The premier itself leaves you loving two ladies more then ever. Clara again becomes the damsel who works best under distress. The Daleks return (AGAIN) in all their shiny glory along with their creator, Davros. Friends, enemies, impending doom… all the classic elements of a to be continued episode. By the time credits roll both your hearts will be in your throat and the teaser clip will leave you desperate for the next installment. How will the Doctor ever make it through this? So much loss, so much at stake!
I give this episode a solid 9 of 10, a full star being lost merely to the return, AGAIN, of the Daleks as the enemy. I am ever so tired of them even if the Supreme Dalek does have an Iron Man outfit on.
