Powers: Season 1, Episode 8: Aha Shake Heartbreak
Christian and Johnny together for the first time since they were kids. Johnny is a decent man, but he is much more of a survivalist than a hero. Even Christian, who seems like a hero, is more of an adrenaline junkie. He does have a heroic side to him, but his days as Diamond were more about fame and glory than selfless heroism. He tries to keep a good image though, so the only people who know are Wolfe and Johnny.
The two things that are always evident in Christian’s behavior are guilt and regret. He misses his powers like crazy and he wants to be a part of that lifestyle again. He likes to save people, but it’s more of an addiction than a calling for him. It makes me curious as to what length he would go in order to get them back. Will he follow through with Johnny and betray everything he stands for to get powers again? It’s hard today know when we’ve already seen him jump off a roof without the ability to fly.
The Sway problem is getting a little worse every time we hear it mentioned. Now it’s become a danger far worse than either a power enhancer or even a killer drug. Now it carries the threat of making Wolfe more powerful than ever if his drainer ever fails. If our “heroes” fail, everything could be at stake. Let’s hope Christian and Johnny can figure this one out. Also it should get us some more Wolfe… Wolfe is awesome.
We got a little more Deena this time, which is good, but she still seems too serious. I like her as the quirky potty mouth she was in the comics. I’m trying not to judge the characters based on the source material, but this is really striking me as an inferior portrayal. I’m okay with everyone else being shifted around and changed, but I’m just not feeling Deena. She’s just not likable at the moment.
Everyone seems to have alternative agendas. Superheroes have agents! It makes sense though, there aren’t a great many selfless people in the world nowadays. The whole Red Hawk fiasco certainly seemed like something that would happen. Zora had to perform to her highest potential, and Retro Girl (who seems to be the least terrible person on the show) wasn’t around to back her up this time. Zora is beautiful, but she’s not ready to be an A-lister just yet.
The tension is getting thicker and I fully expect for the climax of this season to be more than worth it. I think it’s only ten episodes so we’re getting really close. If you didn’t like what you saw when you first started watching, I highly recommend sticking with it!
