The Last Man on Earth: Season 1, Episode 11: The Tandyman Can
I love how consistent they are on this show (other than the title being a complete lie of course). They are sticking with the name Tandy. I’ve never seen a show completely change the name of a main character. I’m curious as to how that transition worked in the writer’s room. It’s just particularly delightful because the man formerly known as Phil has completely accepted the name himself. He’s even taken to hilariously calling himself “The Tandy Man.”
Phil has completely taken over. It’s interesting because it makes you wonder what he’s up to. He’s kind of a normal guy in a silly situation, but he’s also kind of an arrogant jerk. That being said, he has plenty reason to be arrogant and Tandy deserves most of the jerk-like interactions, but its weird. It makes you wonder if he’s up to something, but what is there to be up to? I don’t think it would make sense if there was a gang waiting for him to report back or even if he wanted to steal. The world is empty so he can get whatever he wants.
He has definitely proven to be the most useful of the entire bunch, with the possible exception of Gayle who is a good cook. He’s handy in multiple ways and has even gotten the cow out of Carol’s house. Carol, who is his choice for mate. It’s pretty messed up, because you can see how much Carol wasn’t attracted to Tandy this entire time. She didn’t even make Phil marry her before having sex with him. Maybe since he’s thrown all of his interest in her, Tandy might get a chance with the other women around. Unfortunately, it’s pretty clear that Tandy loves and misses Carol.
Todd just completely self-destructed this week. I can’t say I completely blame him though. Did his jealousy get all the way our of hand? Yes. Should he have tried to trust Melissa some more? Certainly. However, I can see how all of her reassuring words could fly out of the window in light of her hanging out with Phil without any warning.
Him finding out after the fact, combined with Phil’s alpha male attitude could make an already jealous man go to far. Breaking up with Melissa was definitely farther than he should have gone though. Now he’s just as miserable as he was before the world ended. It’s clear Todd wanted Phil dead the entire time. Tandy proposing they kill him was just a door opening for him. I would be insanely surprised if they succeeded. Even more so if they succeed without the women hating them forever. I’m very curious as to what’s going to happen next week. Fine time to stop airing two episodes at once! Thanks a lot Fox!
