The Last Man on Earth: Season 1, Episode 10: Moved to Tampa

Okay, so at this point the title is definitely misleading. My doubts about this show are definitely coming to pass. How can a show with only one man be sustained? The answer is: it can’t. Having women come in is a pretty obvious move, but the title makes you think there won’t be any other males characters. The introduction of Todd was excusable, but I think the show is starting to assume a few things about their audience.

The foremost assumption is that everyone watching is going to be watching from the start. That’s the only way I can imagine someone not getting confused upon tuning in. If I was to hear about a show called The Last Man on Earth and see three men when I turned it on, I would probably be turned off. The quality of the humor and plot points are the only things that can keep someone coming. In other words, the show is good.

Phil is finally about to get what he wants: sex with Gayle and Erica! I guess at this point he’s not as worried about Melissa, because he has more than enough. He makes a very smart decision about keeping new people away. Painting over his sign to say he’s no longer there was a pretty good idea for Phil, too bad he’s too ineffectual to actual pull it off.

He’s both lucky and unfortunate that new Phil Miller came along. He’s lucky because he didn’t die from exposure. He’s unlucky because the new Phil Miller is now the best looking guy in the world and extremely useful. Not to mention our original Phil is now known as Tandy. Tandy is also still a bit alienated after his previous exploits and he has yet again lost his opportunity to be with someone other than Carol. Carol, who has also shifted her interest to the new Phil. She even made him apple pie, which old Phil never got while they were married.

The only thing Tandy might have going for him is his “friendship” with Todd. He’s the only one who can feel Tandy’s pain and his behavior is getting more and more self-destructive. Melissa has shown no interested in new Phil, but her beau is insanely jealous. He’s not an attractive man, but he walked into the perfect situation with Melissa and now he’s terrified of losing her. Maybe Todd and Tandy will join together in a brilliant alliance that will get new Phil out of there… probably not though.
